Sun, humidity and high temperature are bad for them. Girls, do you know how to store your cosmetics properly? If your drawers, cases and cabinets are ruled by mayhem, and if you have problems with finding the cosmetics you are currently looking for – it’s high time you changed this!
I hope, you will like the subject of storing and organising cosmetics I’m going to talk about today. Personally, I love having order in my make-up bags and cases for two simple reasons: firstly, everything looks better and, secondly, it drastically shortens time required to apply make-up.
Is it good or bad that we tend to keep our cosmetics in a bathroom? Why some cosmetic products should have their special place in a fridge? What’s the best way to store colour cosmetics? You’re going to find the answers along with many other important information below. Enjoy!
What can facilitate organising our beauty products?
- group the cosmetics accordingly to the purpose they serve, for example, hair, make-up, etc.,
- keep all the items you use on daily basis close at hand,
- regularly run check-ups of your cosmetics (for example, throw away the items that can’t be used any longer because their expiration date has passed),
- to keep everything in order, use plastic or cardboard cups, boxes, etc.,
- read the labels since they often include instructions for storing,
- make use of all cosmetics samples whenever you have the opportunity to do it (for example, while travelling).
When it comes to my ideas, I follow the Golden Four rule. What’s that? In order to make finding cosmetics easier, I have only four places where I store the items. The majority of my beauty products are kept on my dressing table, a part of them in a small shelf in the corridor (mainly fragrances), another part in my bathroom (mainly hair and body care products), and everything which waits for its turn is located in a cardboard box hidden at the bottom of my wardrobe.
Factors decreasing durability of cosmetics:
- The sun – sadly, cosmetics are photo-sensitive, therefore you have to store them in a dark place. It’s worth realizing that it’s not only the sunlight that influences our beauty product negatively since the artificial light works alike. That’s the reason why all the colour cosmetics put on the display in a shop, surrounded by lamps, can be reached for but only to throw them away.
- Humidity – negative impact on cosmetics has humidity, the most of which can be found in a bathroom, indeed. This is the very place where most women keep their beauty products, including colour cosmetics, of course. Humidity encourages bacteria multiplication. When it comes to make-up cosmetics, they frequently lose their quality if exposed to humidity. To clarify, lipsticks get soft and the pigment becomes less durable.
- Temperature – cosmetics loses their quality due to high temperature (especially if it exceeds 25°C), therefore, it’s important to keep them away from any sources of heat such as radiators. Higher temperature is particularly destructive for vitamins which lose their features as a consequence of being frequently warmed up. This also includes being exposed to constant temperature fluctuations.
Why shouldn’t you keep your cosmetics in a bathroom?
First and foremost, because a bathroom features all the negative factors I mentioned above: artificial and very bright light, frequent temperature fluctuations and a high humidity factor. This is the ideal environment for bacteria to develop. Moreover, it’s the bathroom where our cosmetics change their consistency and features the most frequently. Therefore, why do we tend to store our cosmetic treasures in this very place? The answer is simple: because we are lazy. Obviously, it’s closer to reach for a cosmetic that stands in front of a bathroom mirror than go to our bedroom after taking a bath/shower.
From the moment I’ve started taking care of my make-up and conditioning cosmetics, the only beauty products I store in the bathroom are various items for washing as well as a body balm, a toner and of course a toothpaste. These are the very products I need to cleanse my body and use right after showering.
If not in a bathroom then where? I guess, a big dream of all women is having a big dressing table, with a beautiful mirror, which stands in a bedroom and where you can hide all your make-up treasures together with morning and evening care products. If you don’t have a dressing table yet, you can make a good use of a regular drawer. In my case, the function of the dreamy dressing table is played by an old, wooden desk with a huge drawer. I also hung a long shelf above it – nothing is impossible to a willing heart.
Storing cosmetics in a fridge
Where should we keep our cosmetics in order to help them preserve all their features or long? Definitely, some of them should get into… a fridge! Why? The optimal temperature for most cosmetics is from +9 to +15 °C, therefore the friendly environment for our beauty products is by placing them on fridge’s door, and to be more precise, on the shelves that are located as the furthest from the freezer.
Which cosmetics should be stored in a fridge? Slightly cooler climate is favoured by:
- nail polishes (get dense slower);
- lipsticks and lip-glosses (have more intensive colour);
- waterproof mascaras and eyeliners (don’t dry out);
- self-tanning creams and sunscreens (won’t spoil until the next season);
- all organic cosmetics, with no preservatives, eco-products;
- fragrances (become more intensive, during the summer they breeze our skin up).
I hope, my short How-To Guide helps you keep in order your cosmetic hauls and taught you how to take care for their quality. Bear in mind that the most important is to store cosmetics in low temperature, in a dry place where sunrays don’t have any access. Don’t display your eyeshadows and lipsticks on your windowsill. Hence, take care of the proper arrangement of your cosmetic products so you can enjoy their performance longer.
Good Luck!!!
